ABOUT Léan
At his young age, Léan van der Merwe has evolved into a respected and sought after artist. He often says, “since the first day I touched clay I was hooked.” He enjoys pushing the limits of his personal strength and ability to make bold new pieces, finding the perfect glaze combo and just simply loving every second with his clay medium. His bold approach has resulted in news and magazine article features, gallery shows and an immense social media following since he launched his @argilebylean account in late 2017.
His work has even found the attention of tour groups visiting Cape Town, South Africa with interest in his work as a local artist. Léan is proud to be an artist, teacher and mentor to fellow community potters of all races and sexual orientations in his post-apartheid South African artist community of Cape Town. Through his workshop tours he has been able to spread knowledge of his craft and awareness of how art brings together communities and now the world through social connectivity.
